This scramble starts from the New Dungeon Ghyll car park, and is considered a grade 1.
Head round the back of the public house to the stream through the wooden gate from the car park. Follow the stream up the hill and across the foot bridge, from here you will be able to see the style ahead on the path.
Once you have crossed over the style you will be able to see Tarn Crag Gill to your right and the start of your scramble As you approach into the gill you are met by the first cascade fall which falls over a vertical rock, this can be ascended in dry conditions but if the fall is in flow then you can traverse left up the embankment to the trees and over the top, dropping back down into the gill. Continue up the gill.
At about half way you are met at a Y junction where the gill splits in two, here take the right hand gill as it proves to be the more adventurous route. As you approach the top of the gill you are confronted with a very narrow passage that is often best avoided as this is often very wet and slippy. If you do ascend this cascade then you will be met by another very steep cascade that should only be attempted in very low water. from here you will reach the top of the gill and the scramble finishes at the stone wall.
For those of that do not wish to attempt the narrow cascade then an exit to the right can be made at this point, a note of caution though you must stay close to the stones that are laid out to your right as you climb out, as a direct ascent out of the gill we lead you onto a steep grassy bank and a slippy here would result in a fall into the bottom of the gill.
Descent:
The descent back to the car park can be made by following the stone wall to it’s left until you meet the path follow this path until you meet the main path back down to the car park.
Link Up’s
It is possible to link up other routes once you exit Mill Gill. Just above you to the left is Tarn crag. On Tarn crag you have two options of scrambling up The Groove (Grade 3*) or The Spur (Grade 2*). If you take on one of these scrambles then you could continue over the top of Tarn Crag and onto Pavey Ark which now faces you on the opposite side of the Angle Tarn. Jack’s rake is a classic and is graded at 1***.
